Whose IDENTITY is it?

Our sense of identity comes down to an explanation of who we think we truly are. How do you perceive yourself? We all want to feel worthy. Our children have the same feelings. They want to be valued and to know that they are valued. This is self esteem. Our self esteem can effect our mental health and behavior. It can also undermine how we relate to others in a positive way.

One point to consider is that self worth is the measure that we feel positive about who we are as individuals. When we look in the mirror we hope to see someone that we are truly happy with. This self-view is so important for children. Children are motivated to be seen in a favorable manner.

The second point is all about self efficacy. Self efficacy is the degree in which one feels that they are able to change an environment by the way they act. Self efficacy can also be known as self competence. A child’s identity is so important to him or her.

The third point is defining who we are as individuals. Children need to know their family identity. Their culture, family traditions and heritage are important in developing them into who they are as individuals. As educators we need to be aware of this and respond to children in a positive way despite their home environment.
